Ensuring complete visibility of network data is the first critical component of analysis.  There are two common ways for a monitoring device to access network traffic: using a switch’s SPAN session (also known as port mirroring) or a network TAP (Test Access Port).  Because of their nature, network TAPs have significant benefits over the use of SPAN ports:

•Taps do not alter the time relationships of frames.
•Taps do not introduce additional jitter or distortion.
•VLAN tags are not normally passed through the SPAN port.
•Taps do not groom data nor filter out physical layer error packets.
•Short or large frames are not filtered.
•Bad CRC frames are not filtered.
•Taps do not drop packets regardless of the bandwidth.
•Taps are not addressable network devices and cannot be hacked.
•Taps are passive and fault tolerant.
•Taps do not care if the traffic is IPv4 or IPv6, it passes all traffic through.

Network Fiber Tap, F16

Passive, easy to install, fault tolerant and transparent to the network, the F16 Fiber Optic Tap offers an efficient and cost effective solution for IDS, SNMP, RMON, and Protocol analysis. Since it is transparent to the network there is no point of failure, no network downtime, and 100% security. The F16 operates at maximum wire speed, monitoring half/full duplex traffic and is capable of monitoring and copying all seven (7) protocol layers and any packet size, including errors.

All Simena Fiber Taps are “all-optical”, data rate independent and designed for use in 10/100/1000 and 10Gb Ethernet, ATM, SONET, FDDI, etc networks. High quality, low loss Zirconia sleeve adapters are used in both Multi- and Single-Mode models. The F16 has three (3) duplex LC connectors in each network link – two (2) for the network and one (1) for the analyzer. The unit is compact, housed in a rigid metal enclosure, and can be ordered in Network/Tap ratios of 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, 80/20, and 90/10.

Network Fiber Tap, F4L

Simena’s TAP-F4L is a quad (4) port, passive tap, with LC Connectors for fiber optic Gigabit (1G), 10 Gigabit (10G) or ATM links. It is available in Multi Mode (SX) and Single Mode (LX/ZX) with different split ratios. The rack-mountable TAP-F4L has the highest port density for a tap solution. Up to 12 ports can be rack mounted in one rack unit (RU) space.

Once in place, the TAP-F4L enables the monitoring of half/full duplex fiber networks and allows the

moving of test equipment without breaking the circuit. The Tap is transparent to the network and non-intrusive for 100% security. The Permanent Network Link feature guarantees permanent network connectivity. Unlike SPAN ports, it can monitor all seven(7) protocol layers and any packet size including errors. High Quality (low loss) Zirconia sleeve adapters are used in both Multi and Single Mode models. The TAP-F4L splits the laser light from the tapped fiber network such that some of the light continues down the tapped link and the rest is diverted to the tap. It can be ordered in any of the following Network/Tap ratios: 50/50, 60/40, 70/30, 80/20, 90/10.
